Abstract

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of school life in middle/high school multicultural adolescents' in Seoul and to suggest educational support for multicultural adolescents.

In order to achieve this purpose, this study reviews the multicultural policies of Seoul Metropolitan City (below, SMC) and Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. At the same time, this study is conducted by surveys and interviews.

The main results of the survey study follows below:

First of all, only about one third of the multicultural adolescents understood the contents of their class. The shorter the residence period among migrant pupils proved the lower degree of understanding in class.

Secondly, multicultural adolescents appeared to have no difficulties in their relationships with friends and teachers. On the other hand, teachers were concerned with the low achievement of the multicultural youth. These results were consistent with those of the interview.

Thirdly, multicultural pupils are recognized to have the most difficulty in schoolwork, teachers are also holding a 'class subject'

Fourthly, 14.1% of the multicultural youth have considered drop ping out of school. Research has shown that migrant pupils think about dropping out of school 1.7 times more than South Korea born multicultural youths.

According to the interviews, migrant pupils are having difficulty in learning Korean. So, they appeare to have lower achievement scores than other students in the class. Teachers explain the causes due to a deficiency in the ability to understand Korean and due to a cultural gap of education. The migrant pupils' concern is not about his/her identity as a Korean but about acquiring nationality. Therefore they try to obtain an official certification given by government in order to legally stay in Seoul.

As a result, this study suggests several strategies such as: 1. Providing systematic support of multicultural youth. 2. Offering programs that can help improve the education of the multicultural youth. 3. Building the network between public and nonpublic institutions.
