Abstract

The arterial public transit system in Seoul can be classified greatly into arterial bus and urban rail systems. However the connection of two systems has not been well activated. In order to increase transportation demand, the effectively connected transfer systems and policy are required.

This study analyzes the influencing factor to transfer walking environment between urban rail and arterial stations and provides derived implications for building safe and convenient transferring walking environment.

For the analysis of transferring walking environment, 77 number of sections connecting urban rail stations to the bus stations located on exclusive median bus lane are selected and analyzed in terms of transfer time, distance and transfer rate etc. The reason of poor degree of transfer connection between two systems come out due to the long distance feeling of time and spatial separation between two systems.

The effective improvement seems to depend on how 5 minutes of time distance can be overcome, currently transfer walking times between urban rail stations and those of exclusive median bus lane are analyzed mostly exceeded over this value.
We classified transfer sections into 5 - A, B, C, D, E - types based on the arrangement distance between two system's stations, and proposed possible improvement strategies for each type. We proposed various pedestrian facilities and such as mid and light-scaled infrastructures and showed how these can be effectively installed and operated for the improvement of walking environment. Also, the importance of integrated design of two systems is emphasized and mentioned in terms of political and institutional standard.
