Abstract

Big data is defined as dataset that is so voluminous that researchers can not collect, store, manage, or analyze such data with normal database software. Because of the large number of transportation system users, potential benefits of collecting and distributing real-time transportation data, and increasing demand for processing and analyzing new kinds of data from cutting-edge technologies such as autonomous vehicles, it is expected that transportation sector can achieve positive changes by applying big data analysis.

In this study, we investigated the status of big data relative to the transportation and examined their applicability to develop or improve transportation policies and services. Moreover, we suggested new policies and services that can be derived from our study and sorted them into transportation planning, safety, public transportation, and operation. To promote future research, we described the mechanism of each policy and service at the conceptual level.

Applying big data to transportation system will reduce data collection cost and time and enhance social benefits. Although there are several barriers to using big data analysis, professionals should overcome these obstacles by establishing strategic partnerships with organizations retaining data, proposing amendments to current laws to the national government and the National Assembly, systemically managing data presently owned and sharing data with research groups.
