This study evaluated the status of 13 smart shelters in Seoul, user satisfaction, and willingness to pay. We examined both the smart shelters installed during the pilot period and case studies from domestic and international contexts. Additionally, we reviewed survey results related to smart shelters from previous bus satisfaction studies in Seoul.
Users were found to be satisfied with smart shelters compared to regular stops. However, some shelters had problems with usability due to damaged facilities and poor cleanliness. Awareness of shelter components increased for frequently used facilities but decreased for less relevant ones. Many users struggled to understand the platform scheduling system.
In a contingent valuation method(CVM) survey, users indicated a willingness to pay approximately 789 KRW annually per household, which is reasonable compared to previous city projects. However, given the high percentage of respondents unwilling to pay, any expansion should consider operational costs and revenue from advertising.
To enhance operations, the implementation of a fully functional bus platform guidance system is crucial. Adjustments to shelter facilities based on user satisfaction and cost analysis are necessary. Finally, integrating other bus policy support within smart shelters should be explored.
