Establishment of Urban Traffic Management Strategies in Response to Mobility Technology Innovation

The Seoul Metropolitan Government is currently facing various challenges in traffic management due to changes in the traffic environment and future user needs. These changes include the continuous decrease in the population, the increase in traffic due to metropolitanization, the development of electric vehicles and autonomous vehicle technology, and the need for eco-friendly transportation. In response, the city is implementing various policies and pilot projects to prepare for these changes, including the establishment of an infrastructure maintenance plan for autonomous vehicles, the pilot project in Sangam and Cheonggyecheon, and the consideration of building an underground network for autonomous vehicles.

The underground network for autonomous vehicles is expected to have a high efficiency and increase transportation capacity compared to general automobiles due to the characteristics of autonomous vehicles and the operation of non-signal lakes. Additionally, the network is expected to reduce traffic time by about 30 ~ 70% compared to the existing traffic time, making it an efficient transportation infrastructure facility. The introduction of the autonomous driving DRT system is also expected to enable up to 2 million people transportation per day.

To cope with changes in the future traffic environment, it is essential to conduct research on new means of transportation such as autonomous vehicle underground network construction and urban air traffic. Furthermore, in-depth research on the efficient operation of the underground network for autonomous vehicles and the maintenance of related laws and systems should be continued. Practical route reviews and ground traffic analyses are also necessary for the entire Seoul city. In addition, the introduction of in-mobility services should be considered to meet future user needs.
