Abstract

Taxi mobile applications significantly affect the taxi call industry in Seoul. This innovation started EZ Taxi in 2012 and various other mobile platform companies have developed similar taxi apps. Taxi apps compared to conventional taxi call services. These 1) convenience, 2) no extra cost, and 3) eas access to taxi driver profiles. Taxi drivers also prefer taxi apps since they can find their passenger easily. Thus these advantages the popularity of taxi apps, changes taxi operational patterns.

To explore the pattern changes, we trace taxi trip information of company taxis privately-owned taxis.e utilize taxi trip-logs from the drivers’ smart-phone application. The results indicate that company taxis used the taxi app 3.7 trips per day the privately-owned taxi drivers used the taxi app 4.2 trips per day. This is meaningful increase given the conventional call services (1 call per day). Taxi apps contribute to improving the taxi. For drivers, an increase in travel distance and fares. The average distance of each trip longer than 2015, that drivers could increase their efficiency by picking up long distance passengers. he trip profile analysis showed that private-owned taxi drivers a flexible schedule, tend to select long distance trips more than company taxi drivers. In addition, time occupancy rate is calculated by dividing the total passenger time over total time, increase significantly from 2015 distance-based occupancy rate also increase meaningfully from 2015.

The improvement of taxi apps efficiency does not overall success in taxi services. A field survey was conducted to investigate the satisfaction drivers passengers. Drivers showed high contentment in “convenience of choosing passengers” whereas passengers showed their preferences in the convenient interfaces of apps. However, taxi drivers complained about “No shows” or “Cancelled calls without prior notification”. contrast, experienced unreasonable refusals of pickup from the apps. This inconvenience can be regarded as a negative aspect of taxi apps, since taxi drivers prefer long distance passengers and their passengers. survey that some taxi drivers the app arrival in order to receive other passengers’ trip requests; this could distort the taxi operational information used to the analysis.

axi apps contribute to reducing passengers’ wait time, increasing taxi drivers’ income, and improving system efficiencies. These positive aspects accompany some drawbacks, such as deliberate refusals of short-distance trip requests and frequent cancel requests without mutual agreement drivers and. Since taxi services are closely related to public conveniences and social benefits, Seoul metropolitan government carefully deal with these problems. In addition, the app taxi data should be released to the government. Seoul collects all taxi trip information for public safety and operations through the Seoul Taxis Information System (STIS). However, the apps do not provide trip information to the STIS thus the lack of information taxi operation could deter monitoring taxi service industry. To maintain taxi services, Seoul should manage the growing taxi app market by establishing a guideline that restricts the driver from discriminating passengers, punishes illegal behavior, and the government.
