This study aims to establish a systematic maintenance plan for precast concrete pavement (PCP) sections applied to urban bus stops, particularly in Seoul where such pavements have been deployed in response to severe structural distresses commonly observed in traditional asphalt surfaces. Urban bus stop zones experience high-frequency deceleration and stopping of heavy buses, leading to repetitive loads that accelerate pavement deterioration. To address these challenges, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has implemented PCP since 2010, with 109 sites completed by the end of 2023, and further expansion planned.
Despite its proven durability and long-term performance, PCP lacks a dedicated maintenance guide tailored to its unique structural features. Existing pavement management systems (PMS), which focus on continuous pavement types like asphalt or cast-in-place concrete, cannot adequately reflect the segmented structure and joint-dependent behavior of PCP systems. In particular, the transition zones?areas connecting the PCP to surrounding asphalt pavement?exhibit different distress patterns compared to the main slab sections and thus require specialized evaluation and repair methods.
